RICHMOND COUNTY, GA (WFXG) -

The Richmond County Sheriffs Office is investigating after a four-year-old was accidentally shot at an apartment in the 3100 block of Skinner Mill Road. Justin Foss Jr., 4, was pronounced dead at 11:33 a.m. after he was taken to the Augusta University Pediatric Emergency Room.

The Richmond County Sheriff's Office has charged his father, 27-year-old Justin Foss Sr., with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Additional charges could be forthcoming, according to the law enforcement agency.

An autopsy has been scheduled at the GBI Crime Lab for early next week. An investigation by the Richmond County Coroner's Office and sheriff's office is ongoing.

Around 11 a.m., Foss was taken to Augusta University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Authorities tell us the investigation is in its early stages and no further information is available at this time.

At this time, the sheriff's office has not released what led to this incident. FOX 54 will provide updates as they are made available.
