BURKE COUNTY, GA (WFXG) -

A routine traffic stop in Burke County has led to the arrest of three suspected drug dealers.

Deputies with the Burke County Sheriff's Office pulled over a Nissan Titan Tuesday, July 3 for a seatbelt violation. When deputies approached the vehicle, they noticed the smell of marijuana and were able to see it inside the truck. One of the suspects reportedly put his hand on a pistol that was sitting on the seat.

The investigation led to the arrest of three men. The driver, 19-year-old Tyree Alexander Powell, is charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm during a crime, and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. David Cody Phillips, 22 years old, is charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm during a crime, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of heroin, and violation of not wearing a seatbelt. Joshua Anthony Raymond, 22 years old, is charged with possession of a firearm during a crime and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

During the traffic stop, deputies confiscated two .380 Byrco pistols, 37.1 grams of marijuana, .2 grams of heroin, and digital scales. All three men were taken into custody and booked into the Burke County Detention Center.

Chief Deputy Lewis Blanchard says these kind of pro-active traffic stops are helping to reduce violence in the community.
