HEPHZIBAH, GA (WFXG) - Official's with the Richmond County Mosquito Control spoke to those in Hephzibah Saturday, about what they can do to prevent mosquitoes —now that summer is right around the corner.

Mosquito control techs say its important to clean your pools and pick up trash in front of your home to keep mosquitoes from your home.  Officials say it's against the law to have a habitat that increases the presence of mosquitoes.

There are around 8 or 9 diseases that mosquitoes can carry according to Fred Koehle, project manager with Richmond County Mosquito Control.

These insects can't only spread diseases to you, but they can affect your dogs as well.  According to Koehle, there's a chance dogs can die from a mosquito bite. "Heartworm is very nasty because what it does is, a mosquito when it bites a dog it puts a mite into that dog and it starts growing into worms, which get to be about a foot long and they get into the bloodstream of the dog and they strangle the heart and the dog will die."

If you have any questions or want to take preventative measures you can call 311.
