Graniteville man arrested after standoff with deputies

GRANITEVILLE, SC (WFXG) -

A man is behind bars after a standoff with law enforcement in Aiken County.

According to the Aiken County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called out to do a well-being check at a home on Leitner Street in Graniteville at around 11:45 p.m. Wednesday, May 16. The caller told police her roommate, fifty-four-year-old Scott Baldwin, was threatening to kill himself. She told deputies Baldwin had been living with her on-and-off for about one year. She said he'd lost his job that day and she told him he needed to move back to his other home in Georgia and he responded by saying "I'm just going to kill myself." He reportedly has a history of using meth.

The roommate said Baldwin locked himself in his room for a couple hours then she heard a gunshot. When she went to investigate, he told her to call the police and that he was going to have them kill him. While waiting for deputies to arrive, she says Baldwin began knocking out upstairs windows and fired his shotgun through the window. When deputies arrived, they called for negotiators and SWAT. While waiting for that backup, deputies heard a gunshot from inside the home. Deputies were able to make contact with Baldwin and he eventually exited the home. He was taken to Aiken Regional Medical Center for mental evaluation then to Aiken County Detention Center.

Baldwin is charged with disorderly conduct and gross intoxication.

    A man is in custody after a 5-hour standoff with police in Aiken. According to Lt. Jake Mahoney, Aiken Public Safety received calls at around 3 p.m. saying a man was walking down Jehossee Dr. SE firing shots into the air.
