DEKALB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Family of the mail carrier who was shot to death at her job believe the killer is her boyfriend, a man who is also the father of her 6-month-old daughter.

It happened near the loading area at the Wesley Chapel post office in southeast DeKalb County at about 6 p.m. Monday.

Witnesses described seeing the shooter loitering at a nearby laundromat.

"You could tell he was waiting on somebody," the anonymous witness told CBS46.

The witness was at the laundromat and talked to the gunman only minutes before the shooting.

"I saw him coming out of the door, and he started up the sidewalk, then he turned back around and went around the corner, and then that’s when I heard pow, pow, pow, pow," she recalled.

Postal police identified the woman killed as 22-year-old Tyrika Terrell.  As far as the killer, investigators are reviewing surveillance video from the coin laundry, but have not made an arrest.

Terrell's family described her relationship with her boyfriend as abusive. They heard from Terrell's co-workers that she was on the phone with 911 moments before the shooting to tell them her boyfriend was waiting for her outside and making threats.

"They weren’t protected because they are U.S. Mail, and if somebody comes in like that and shoots someone, that means anybody can walk in there and do all kind of crazy things, so they need some protection there in that spot," said another witness.

Those who work in the area are concerned for their safety and want to know why the back gate to the post office is not more secure.

"I don’t think it would have happened if they had some type of protection here around that postal because that’s where all the mail and everything comes out," said a witness.

The USPIS issued the following statement:

Postal Inspectors responded to a report of a Postal employee shot in the parking lot of the Wesley Chapel Post Office in Decatur, GA on the evening of November 27th.  The Postal employee was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta where the Postal employee was pronounced deceased.  Postal Inspectors, along with the DeKalb Police Department are currently investigating this matter – at this time we cannot go into further details about this on-going investigation.

Terrell's family provided a picture and name of the man who they believe is the shooter, but CBS46 is withholding his identity until police confirm he is their suspect.
