AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

The Georgia Department of Transportation will suspend construction related lane closures on the highways for the weekend.

This will start Friday, September 1st at noon. GDOT is expecting heavy traffic across the state and they are working to make sure the roads are safer for drivers. The department does want drivers to remember that crews may still be working in areas close to the highways.

Holiday's are when the number of roadway fatalities increase and GDOT is asking that drivers slow down and stay alert.

The roadwork suspension ends on Tuesday, September 5th at 5:00 a.m.
