ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Albany Police Department is investigating after a woman was found dead inside a vehicle early Thursday morning.

According to a police report, Ashley Boggs, 28, was found with approximately six gunshot wounds just after midnight.

It happened at the Shoreham Apartments off Dawson Road.

Friends of Boggs are devastated and the people who live in the complex are shaken up.

"All of a sudden, I hear shots fired and I was like 'Wow, it's definitely not fireworks. I know that. It's definitely a gun shot,'" said Eben Barnett, who said he was in his nearby apartment at the time of the shooting. "I was really just out of breath like what's going on what's wrong. I just stayed inside, I didn't know what to do."

Detectives were on the scene investigating for several hours.

Police said they found Boggs slumped over the steering wheel of a car in this parking lot.

EMS rushed her to the hospital where she died.

Now friends are begging for answers.

"Nobody knows why," said Tyneshia Martin. "Because you wouldn't think Ashley would get shot, killed, murdered. You wouldn't think that. Not Ashley Boggs."

Martin said she befriended Boggs a few years ago. She said she had a kind heart.

"If Ashley could help you, Ashley would help you," she explained.

She said Boggs had lived in the same apartment complex as her at one time. Martin recalls times when Boggs would play with her son, and reward him for earning good grades on his report card.

Martin said Boggs was ambitious. She was originally from Savannah and had moved to Albany to attend  Albany State University.

Friends said she'd been working on her master's degree.

"She was in a sorority. She was in the band. And she met a lot of people here who generally loved her," said Martin.

Martin said because she didn't have any family local, Boggs took to people like Martin and many of her ASU friends as family.

The apartment complex was quiet Thursday night. Residents said they are recovering. They hope the violence in the Albany area comes to an end soon.

"I just hope everything, the violence and all this to go away."

People in the complex said they had never seen Boggs car before.

The complex owner said Boggs was not living there.

As the neighborhood quiets down, people close to the victim beg for justice.

"It's unbelievable that someone who is trying to do so much to try to help her own kind and the community could just be taken away for no reason," said Martin.

Police have not named any suspects or a motive yet.
