Aiken county historic museum honors a special man

AIKEN, SC (WFXG) -

The Aiken County Historic Museum held "David Day" in honor of David Drake also known Dave the Potter. Historian and collector Jim Witkowski spoke about the life of David Drake and had some exquisite works of Dave’s art for display.

Drake lived in Edgefield, South Carolina and made over 100 alkaline-glazed stoneware jugs during the 19th century. He is recognized as the first slave potter to ever write words during a time when most slaves were illiterate. Drake often signed his work as "Dave" and inscribed his work with inspirational poetry.

Joyce Bradley found about the lecture by reading the newspaper and thought that his story was beyond inspiring. "I was just really fascinated by a man who was never taught to read and write who writes inspirational quotes on pottery. I think it's real ironic that you can be physically held captive physically but in your mind you're free to wander," says Bradley.

David Drake's work can be found in the Smithsonian at the National Museum of American History in Washington, DC.
