AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

Just days before thousands were expected to flood to Augusta on July 21st for the 31st Southern National's, the entire race was canceled on Friday.
The sanctioning body, Lucas Oil, canceled the race citing financial losses. That decision made the city lose out on millions.

According to the Visitors Bureau, The Southern Nationals was set to bring in more than a $5.5 million.

"The Energy, the noise of the engines, the speed of the boats, the people watching," says Roger Davis. Those are just some of the reasons why he never misses the Augusta Southern Nationals. "Years ago I was walking through the crowd and ran into a cousin I haven't seen that I haven't seen in 20 years from Savannah. This is a Regional event so the whole region is going to lose out. It's sad, not a good day for Augusta right now."

Lucas Oil Drag Boat Racing, the sanctioning body for the Southern Nationals canceled half of the remaining races of the season citing financial losses as the reason.

"It's a sad day for the city, people are going to have to find something else to do that weekend I guess," explains Davis.

He says his frustrations and sadness have now turned into hope that the race will return next year. "So we miss one year, there's always next year and there's plenty of time for someone to put together some sort of way for it happen, I'm hoping. I know a lot of other people in town hoping as well."

Augusta Southern Nationals tell me they will continue to monitor the situation with the sanctioning bodies, but the future of the race in Augusta is up in the air.
