STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) -

Statesboro was awarded $1 million in funding for community revitalization for being a finalist in the America’s Best Communities contest.

About 350 communities entered the three-year competition.

According to a release from the competition, Statesboro will invest in “The Blue Mile”. An underdeveloped stretch of Main Street that connects the downtown area with Georgia Southern University’s campus.

"This is a community that is unique. It's special and we literally love one another and I hope people get that from this prize that we've won today,” said Statesboro Mayor Jan Moore.

"Growing up in Statesboro, I knew that this was a great place, but to really see everyone come together and embrace each other for a common purpose has been really, really rewarding,” said Bob Mikell, a Blue Mile committee member.

In addition to Statesboro, the other two towns placing in the top three are Huntington, West Virginia and Lake Havasu City, Arizona.
