A preliminary report of damage in Edgefield County has determined an EF-2 touched down near Johnston.
Straight line winds in Johnston uprooted dozens of hardwood trees. Tornado damage began on the east side of the city near Winthrow Avenue and continued northeast through Ward before dissipating northwest of Ridge Spring off of Murphy Farm Road.
The tornado reached EF-2 strength, 115 mile per hours winds, along a portion of its track. The track or path was 7.3 miles and the maximum path width of 1000 yards.
Most of the damage was EF-0 and EF-1, but EF-2 damage was noted near Ward.
For reference, the Enhanced Fujita Scale classifies tornadoes into the following categories:
EF0: wind speeds 65 to 85 mph
EF1: wind speeds 86 to 110 mph
EF2: wind speeds 111 to 135 mph
EF3: wind speeds 136 to 165 mph
EF4: wind speeds 166 to 200 mph
EF5: wind speeds greater than 200 mph
