UPDATE: RCSO charges 22-year-old Michael Scott in connection with woman's death

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

Officials from the Richmond County Sheriff's Office are still trying to put the pieces together from a Friday night homicide.

Police have charged 22-year-old Michael Anthony Scott in relation to the homicide. His charges include involuntary manslaughter and possession of a firearm during a crime. The  community is shocked that a resident who was as friendly as they come, is now gone.

And people who live in the area say incidents like these don't happen often.

"Why, why though? She's only 22, she was young," says one resident, Roshunda Hudson.

"Astonished, it's a pretty safe neighborhood," says another resident.

"That just makes no sense for somebody to die like that," says Kaine Dukes, another person living at Bertram Court. Disbelief is what residents at Center West Apartments are saying when they heard about the early morning shooting that killed one woman. Officials say 22-year-old Lashawn Sims was shot last night in these apartments where she lived on Bertram Court. She was rushed to the hospital where she later died.

"I just can't believe that happened here, it's really quiet around here." For Kaine Dukes and his family who's only been living here for only three months. He doesn't know what to think "That's just crazy its already bad that a lot of people are getting killed in this world for no reason."

And for parents like Roshuna Hudson who's been living here for more than 5 years, she says she wouldn't expect this from a a tight-knit community where everyone knows each other. "I know everybody in my building and I also know the property manager and also the faces. Even though people are constantly moving in and out we still don't have nothing like that going on, it's crazy."

But despite the shocker, residents say this is a still a safe community.

22-year-old Lashawn Simms leaves behind a three year old son.
