Former Aiken County deputy-in-training pleads guilty in wife's death

AIKEN COUNTY, SC (WFXG) -

A former Aiken County Sheriff's Office deputy-in-training has pleaded guilty for the 2015 shooting death of his wife.

The South Carolina Attorney General's office confirms with FOX 54 that Matthew Blakley pleaded guilty to the charge of Involuntary Manslaughter Wednesday morning. He is sentenced to five years in prison, the maximum sentence for this crime.

At around 7:36 p.m. June 15, 2015, officers were called out to the 1900 block of Coulter Drive near North Augusta High School for the reported shooting. Twenty-four-year-old Candace Blakley was pronounced dead at the scene. Matthew Blakley was arrested the next morning and charged with Involuntary Manslaughter. He was later terminated from the Aiken County Sheriff's Office, where he had worked since November 2014.

At the time, Sheriff Michael Hunt called the shooting a "... very unfortunate and tragic incident for both families involved." He went on to say "Our thoughts and prayers are with them."

    According to officials, David Mackie was not killed by the fire set to his home. According to Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton, Mackie died from blunt force trauma and sharp force injuries.
