The driver suspected to have hit and killed a pedestrian on Wednesday has been arrested.

38-year-old Christopher Cheek was arrested late Thursday evening during a felony traffic stop at Georgia Ave.and Alpine Dr. in North Augusta. He is currently being held at the Aiken County Detention Center. He has been charged with 1st-degree vehicular homicide, hit & run, reckless driving and failure to maintain lane. No bond has been set and an extradition hearing as not been scheduled.

The victim, Tim Smith was jogging west on Wheeler Rd. on Oct.12 when he was struck by what is believed to be Cheek's vehicle. Witnesses say the driver of the vehicle apparently slowed down after hitting Smith and then left the scene fleeing east on Wheeler Rd. towards Flowing Wells. Smith was taken to Doctors Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Smith was wearing a yellow reflective vest and was facing traffic while jogging when he was hit.
