National Fire Prevention week is upon us and Augusta will have a few events to educate the community about fire prevention and safety and help residents stay aware of the dangers of fires and how to prevent them.

The Augusta Fire Department and Augusta-Richmond County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) are working together for what they are calling a "Fall Safety Blitz". Firefighters and volunteers will go throughout the Harrisburg community checking the smoke detectors of residents to make sure they are in good working condition. They will also be replacing batteries to those that need it. This event will be Oct. 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The fire department will also have its fire safety house and trucks at A.L. Williams park located at 1850 Broad Street in Augusta. There will hot dogs, drinks, and safety materials. The event is free and open to the public.

The American Red Cross will be installing new smoke detectors in homes all across Georgia and they plan to make it a record. #3Kin1DAY is an initiative to  set the record for the highest number of smoke alarms installed on a single day in the state. The goal is to install at least 3,000 new smoke detectors in homes that need them. Participating counties will be Brunswick, Berrien, Chatham, Cobb, Coffee, Dekalb, Dougherty, Hale, Macon-Bibb, Murray, Newton, Richmond, Troup and Walker counties. The event in Richmond County will be Oct. 15 beginning at 8:30 a.m. at St. Luke United Methodist Church, 209 Crawford Ave, Augusta GA  30904. Red Cross representatives and volunteers will meet at this location and then go door-to-door installing smoke detectors. The public is welcome to volunteer in this effort.
