AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

When a natural disaster affects our area, Augusta's fire chief changes hats and serves as the city's EMA director.

While officials across the city praised the response surrounding Hurricane Matthew, some say it highlighted the fact that the city should hire an EMA director outside of the fire department.

Commissioner Ben Hasan told Fox 54 that given the way things flowed, he doesn't see a need to explore that option at this time.

When asked if he would support hiring a part-time employee for the position, Hasan said, "The answer is no. If we are saying we want to do it because we're a government of this magnitude and this size, then maybe there's some validity to have the conversation. But, just from what happened this weekend, there's nothing to support that, at all."

The mayor's office has the final say on whether or not to appoint a new EMA director.
