STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) -

Becoming the 13th president of Georgia Southern immediately makes Dr. Jaimie Hebert one of the most influential leaders in Southeast Georgia.

He hopes to fit Southern as much as he feels Southern fits him.

"I would be hard pressed to find a university that embodies my principles and values as much as Georgia Southern,” said Dr. Hebert.

He points at an attractive campus, distinguished faculty and a great town/gown relationship as factors in the university's growth and success, especially for a public university at which almost half the students are the first generation in their family to attend college.

"And we put them through an educational institution that's right on par with some of the finest institutions in the country,” he said.

He also talked about the role athletic teams play in the campus culture and visibility on the national landscape.

"It provides us a launching point in my desire to bring some national notoriety to our academic programs. It gives us a flag to rally around, it certainly helps morale,” Dr. Hebert said.

The former provost at Sam Houston State, he feels his experience and connections can bring more research and high-profile partnerships to campus.

"What I'd like to see with Georgia Southern is that we become a major player on the national stage,” he said.

He hopes his presidency adds further to the rich tradition here at Georgia Southern.

In his first 100 days as president, Hebert will be gathering information and ideas by asking students, alumni, faculty, staff and the community to complete a survey to share thoughts on Georgia Southern and identify what they feel should be his first priorities.
