GREENWOOD, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Greenwood man reportedly walked into his neighbor's yard and shot their dog in the face with a 12 gauge shotgun while under the influence of alcohol.

Luke, a Malamute-Siberian Husky mix, was reportedly shot while the family was away visiting their grandmother.

A witness reported that Eddie Gene Matthews walked down the street with his shotgun and shot the dog in the face. The dog then ran off into the woods, while Matthews held his weapon to his chest and walked back home.

It was reported that Matthews claimed the dog tried to bite a young relative that was visiting him.

The guardian of the dog said he "is a friendly dog" and "has never shown aggression to any child".

Sergeant Baldwin, of the Leflore County Sheriff's Office, responded to the scene and arrested Matthews, who he says could be charged with a misdemeanor charge of aggravated cruelty. The charge carries a maximum penalty of a $2,500 fine and up to 6 months in prison.

He could face an additional charges because of the drunken state he was apparently in.

In Defense of Animals, the international animal protection organization that runs the Justice for Animals campaign in Mississippi, is calling for the prosecution of Matthews.

They are also working to see a first offense felony bill passed in 2017.
