Tuesday at the Public Safety Committee Meeting, committee members voted against the Augusta Fire Department's request to purchase bulletproof vests for firefighters.

Fire Chief Christopher James submitted a request to the committee to purchase thirty-five ballistic vests which would be worn by firefighters should they need to respond to an active shooter incident, such as the one which recently happened in Appling. The department requested to purchase the vests from DGG Tactical, an equipment and uniform supply company in Florida, for a total cost $40,075.

With Commissioner Bill Lockett absent from the committee meeting, all three present members would have needed to approve the motion for it to get the committee's recommendation to Augusta Commission. Commissioner Sean Frantom voted against.

Chief James's request to purchase the vests will be voted on by the Augusta Commission Tuesday, May 3. However, the request will not have the backing of the Public Safety Committee.
