AIKEN, SC (WFXG) -

An Aiken man has been arrested in a child cruelty case related to his five nieces. Bobby Johnson is accused of hitting three of his nieces with a belt following a kitchen fire. According to an incident report, Johnson displayed signs of intoxication while he was talking to officers.

The children were left at home alone. They told an officer that they had to boil water for their baths and must have accidentally left the stove on when they left the kitchen. The oldest child came back to the kitchen, found the stove on fire and smothered the fire with salt. When Johnson returned to the home on Plunkett Avenue NW, there was smoke in the house.

That’s when the children said Johnson grew agitated and lashed out. One of the them called 911 for help. Responding officers noted welts on at least two children.

Officers also found outstanding warrants for Johnson through the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office. He was booked into the County Jail on five counts of unlawful conduct to a child.
