BURKE COUNTY, GA (WFXG) - The Georgia Bureau of Investigations now says the body found in the woods in Burke County has been positively identified as Father Rene Robert. Robert was a Florida resident and was last seen on Sunday, April 10, 2016, in St. Augustine, Fl.
GBI Public Affairs says because of the condition of the body, the autopsy could not determine for sure if it was Robert. Officials had to use dental records from Florida. The autopsy did pinpoint the cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds. Investigators are calling the case a homicide.
On Wednesday, suspect Steven Murray was charged with Robert's murder. A Burke County judge denied bond for Murray during a court appearance.
Investigators say Murray is the one who led them to Robert's body. The Georgia investigation is ongoing with continued involvement from the authorities in Florida and South Carolina.
