Crews believe Augusta vacant home fire was arson

House fire in Augusta destorys vacant home

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - Fire crews believe that a fire that burned down a vacant home Monday night was the work of an arsonist.

Fire battalion chief Ivan Bolgla said the crews smelled petroleum in the house, meaning it was likely a set fire.

Just before 9 p.m. Monday, witnesses could see the building burning from the parking lot of the Kroger on 15th Street. Several people called the fire department to tell first responders what was happening. Nobody was hurt in the fire.

Bolgla said there will be an open investigation into who started the fire.
