FORT GORDON, GA (WFXG) - If you see or smell smoke in the area of Fort Gordon on Thursday afternoon, there's no reason to panic. According to the Columbia County EMA Director, a prescribed burn got underway at 11 a.m.
We're told the burn will cover 574 acres. It's happening at Fort Gordon's Training Areas 34 and 35.
Prescribed burns are supposed to safely reduce excessive amounts of brush, shrubs, and trees. The goal is to encourage new vegetation to grow.
