LINCOLN COUNTY, GA (WFXG) - After being closed for several hours, I-20 westbound finally reopened Tuesday afternoon at the Savannah River Bridge. Even though G-DOT crews had originally planned to keep one lane closed for repairs, the decision was made to get drivers back on the interstate right away.
This comes after a tractor trailer crash on the Georgia side of the bridge early Tuesday morning. All westbound lanes had to be shut down while the truck was unloaded and removed from the road. Traffic was re-routed for hours.
Repairs to the bridge railing still need to be made. Lanes will remain open through the Wednesday morning rush. G-DOT plans to close the westbound right lane at 9 a.m. Wednesday. There will be an advanced warning message board, signs, arrow board and barrels to help direct drivers.
This closure will start on the South Carolina side of the bridge at mile 1.5 westbound. The work should last two days as weather allows.
