Portion of Dorchester Road near Air Force Base entrance reopened after accident

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

Emergency officials say traffic lanes heading towards Summerville on Dorchester Road from the Air Force Base are open following a fatal accident.

Traffic heading towards North Charleston is closed on Dorchester Road between Cross County Road and the entrance to the Air Force Base.

Officials are asking motorists to seek alternate routes.

Police say a Ford Expedition was traveling on Dorchester Road when it struck a Buick head on.

According to NCPD officials, the collision caused the Buick to be pushed back into a Ford F150.

An orange Smart Car attempted to swerve around the incident, but struck a curb and flipped on its right side off the roadway, police say.

NCPD Crime units responded to document the case.

The Charleston County Corner's Office and NCFD are on scene.

According to police, the driver of the Buick died at the scene, while the driver of the Expedition was transported to Trident Hospital.
