AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - A charge is pending against the owner of a gun accidentally fired by an elementary student at W.S. Hornsby K-8 School Tuesday, according to Richmond County School System officials.
The gun owner will be charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor, school officials said.
A third-grade student brought a gun to the school Tuesday morning, school officials said. He was playing with the gun inside his desk when it went off. A bullet grazed a female student. She was released from the hospital Tuesday afternoon.
The student who fired the weapon will be turned over to the Department of Juvenile Justice, school officials said.
The gun belonged to the boyfriend of the child's maternal grandmother. School officials said the child used a chair to climb onto the kitchen counter and was able to reach the gun that was on top of a cabinet.
The case also is being referred to the Department of Family and Child Protective Services.
