High 5 4 Kids: Kayleigh Golden

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - This weeks High 5 4 Kids goes to Kayleigh Golden, a rising fourth-grader who has made tremendous progress at the GRU Literacy Center.

"We read stories, then we play our game and go into the questions to make sure we understand the material," Kayleigh said.

Kayleigh, along with hundreds of other local students, are able to take advantage of the free one-on-one tutoring offered by certified teachers across all subject areas.

"In two or three months, we have some students who are making two and three years gain," said Dr. Paulette Harris, the center's director.

Harris said Kayleigh is a shinning example of what the program can do. In one year, she has gone from reading at a first-grade level to mastering fifth-grade material.

"They're walking billboards of the success we have," Harris said.

The Literacy Center depends on grant money and donations from the public to keep their doors open.

But, one of their biggest supporters - and future volunteer - may be right under their noses!

"When I grow up, I want to come here and tutor some kids!" Kayleigh said.
