An 18-wheeler driver is dead after a truck exploded and caught fire on Interstate 20 eastbound near Bobby Jones Expressway Wednesday afternoon.

Michael Hacker, 53, died from blunt force injuries, Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen said. The body was burned beyond recognition and had to be taken to the GBI Crime Lab in Atlanta for an autopsy.

Three tractor-trailers were involved in the wreck around 3 p.m., Richmond County deputies said.

One driver was trapped, according to the Augusta Fire Department. Deputies said multiple people were injured.

I-20 eastbound between exit 194 and 196 was shut down for a couple of hours. Traffic was being diverted onto Wheeler Road and Belair Road.
