COLUMBIA COUNTY, GA (WFXG) - The body of a missing man who was wanted for receiving stolen goods was found in Clarks Hill Lake at the West Dam recreation area.
The body was identified as Devin Wright, Columbia County Deputy Coroner Bonnie King said Tuesday.
Columbia County Deputies said an autopsy is not complete yet, but it looks like a suicide by drowning.A dive team started searching the lake for Wright Saturday morning after park rangers noticed a vehicle and some personal items - later identified as Wright's - were left at the park overnight.
"We put divers in the water and they performed a systematic search," Rusty Welsh, Deputy Director at the Columbia County Emergency Management Agency said. "They were in the water for about an hour or so."
Wright had a warrant out for his arrest after investigators with the Aiken County Sheriff's Office conducted a week-long search of his property at 3365 Columbia Highway North in the Ridge Spring area of Aiken County and found stolen vehicles and construction equipment.
The investigation started when a man discovered a piece of construction equipment he reported stolen to the Columbia County Sheriff's Office was for sale online. The man was able to find out that the construction equipment was located on Wright's property.
A fisherman in the area says he's near the water a lot, but glad he's never seen anything like this.
"It is sad to find somebody in the water like that," fisherman Kenny Holmes said. "It's something I've never seen before."
Investigators said they found items on Wright's property that were stolen from multiple counties, including Aiken County, Richmond County, Columbia County, Greenwood, Lexington County and Richland County.
