Man charged in shooting death of his girlfriend

AIKEN COUNTY, SC (WFXG) -

A 32-year-old man is behind bars in connection with the shooting death of his girlfriend.

Steven Keith Thurmond, 32, is charged with involuntary manslaughter and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, according to the Aiken County Sheriff's Office. 

Investigators said Thurmond was carelessly handling a firearm, which led to it discharging and striking his girlfriend, 31-year-old Amanda Smith.

Deputies responded to 653 Crossroads Park Dr. around 12:24 a.m. and found Smith suffering from a gunshot wound to the stomach. She was pronounced dead at Aiken Regional Medical Center around 1:18 a.m.

Thurmond is being held at the Aiken County Detention Center.
