5 people taken to hospital after 6-vehicle wreck on I-20

COLUMBIA COUNTY, GA (WFXG) -

Five people were sent to the hospital Monday afternoon after a wreck involving six vehicles on Interstate 20 eastbound near the Columbia County and McDuffie County line, according to Georgia State Patrol.

Troopers responded to the crash near mile marker 178 around 2:37 p.m. Traffic was backed up between mile markers 179 and 180 due to the investigation of the crash.

A Ford F-250 pulling a landscaping trailer was driving eastbound in the left lane when it came upon stopped traffic, troopers said. The truck left the roadway and traveled into the grass median, passing several cars that were stopped in the left lane.

The truck sideswiped a Toyota Camry, then re-entered the left lane and hit a Dodge Charger in the rear, causing a chain reaction. The Dodge Charger hit the rear of a Volvo tractor-trailer, which forced the Volvo tractor-trailer into the back of a freightliner trailer and into the back of a Ford Explorer.

The driver of the Ford F-250 was charged with following too closely.

Georgia State Patrol is still investigating.
