COLUMBIA COUNTY, GA (WFXG) - In Columbia County the new skate park is finally open.
County leaders said after talking about building it for nearly a decade it finally came to fruition. City leaders and skaters alike are excited.
"When I was about 3 or 4 my older brother got my a skateboard and I've been hooked ever since," said Issac Kirby.
The Aiken native said he now has a reason to frequent Augusta.
"I just like to grind the rail. It's the best feeling ever," Kirby explained.
Kirby joined a few dozen others for the opening of the Columbia County skate park at Blanchard Woods on Friday afternoon.
"I'm excited. I live a mile down the road. It's right next to my house. I can basically walk here," said Kyle Carmichael.
The park will be open every day until dark and once lights are installed there, the park will be open until 10 p.m.
"It's like a family. It's a culture. We all like the same thing. It's the best. You just skate and have a good time and now we got a park," Carmichael explained.
"Like he said, it's one big family and everyone treats everyone the same. It's nothing but love," said Kirby.
The BMX park was supposed to open today as well but didn't because of vandalism a few weeks ago. It will be open soon but no word on an exact date yet.
The Columbia County Parks and Recreation department put up a fence around the track to prohibit further vandalism.
