AIKEN COUNTY, SC (WFXG) - Three people are being charged with neglect after an elderly man in their care died, according to the Aiken County Sheriff's Office.
George F. Gibson, 74, was dropped off a gas station on Jan. 5 for help, according to the sheriff's office. EMS responded and found Gibson unresponsive. He was transported to Aiken Regional Medical Center.
An autopsy showed that Gibson died from pneumonia and severe decubitis ulcers, according to Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton. Those issues were caused by starvation, lack of nutrition and neglect.
Investigators determined that Gibson lived with Dale Allen Sharkey, 56, Danielle Sharkey, 27, and Renee Sharkey, 26, on Charleston Highway in Windsor. When investigators met with the Sharkeys at their house, they found it was full of trash and animal and human waste.
The residence has been condemned by Aiken County Code Enforcement, and several cats and dogs have been seized.
The Sharkeys admitted that Gibson lived with them and that they brought him with them to Aiken County in 2010, according to arrest warrants. They also said they were aware Gibson was in failing health but failed to seek medical aid for him.
Dale Sharkey and his daughter Danielle Sharkey were arrested and charged with abuse or neglect resulting in the death of a vulnerable adult, according to the sheriff's office. An arrest warrant was issued for Dale Sharkey's other daughter, Renee Sharkey. She was arrested on Jan. 14 and also charged with abuse or neglect resulting in the death of a vulnerable adult.
