Additions made to Augusta's Heroes Overlook

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - Some local veterans got a permanent place in the city's history on Veteran's Day.

The Augusta Richmond County Historical Society added several names to bricks and a plaque on the Heroes Overlook on the Riverwalk.

World World II air cadet Marion Wallace Morgan, or Wally, as he was affectionately called was added. Wally grew up in Augusta and graduated from Richmond Academy and Junior College of Augusta - which is now GRU. Organizers say it wasn't until people here in Augusta made them aware of Morgan's career that he would be considered for a plaque on the Heroes Overlook.

"25 or so came forward at that time and they were all validated and had the plaques mounted and over the years, since 1994, about 20 years now, we've added more names as they came to our attention," said Russell Brown with the Augusta Richmond County Historical Society. "In fact, we had to build an extension to the wall, 6 or 8 years ago, to put more plaques up and this is the most recent."

Wally died in Chicago but his legacy will always live on at the Riverwalk.
