AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - Evans High School senior Marlana Ryan is your typical 12th grader. She's getting ready to graduate and is busy working on her senior project.
“I'm coordinating a wheelchair basketball tournament as the final [part] of my senior project,” Ryan explained.
But none of the kids are actually wheelchair bound and that is turning heads.
I want to interact with all my peers [and] put them in the shoes of people who don't have the capabilities that they have,” Ryan said. “What better way to [do that than to] have them do the things that people with disabilities can do.”
Ryan said she was inspired after watching her uncle come back from serving in the military.
“My uncle had a stroke while he was serving [and] had to medically retire,” Ryan said.
The basketball tournament, dubbed the ‘Ball So Hard Wheelchair Basketball Tournament' is Friday at 6p.m. and will involve kids from Evans, Greenbrier, and Grovetown high schools. The winner will then compete against a real wheelchair basketball team, the Augusta Bulldogs.
Ryan's grandparents said they're beyond proud of what she's trying to do.
“Words cannot express,” Martin Ryan said.
Ryan is headed into the Air Force after graduation and plans to go into physical therapy.
Tickets to the game are three dollars and all proceeds will be donated to Champions Made From Adversity.
