MARTINEZ, GA (WFXG) - The Columbia County district attorney plans to seek the death penalty against a man accused of shooting and killing another man in a Martinez church parking lot on Aug. 14.
Daniel Robinson was indicted by a Columbia County grand jury in September on nine felony counts for the shooting death of 55-year-old William Davitte and the assault of his wife, Jennifer Davitte, outside Marvin United Methodist Church on Belair Road.
The charges include murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, hijacking a motor vehicle, armed robbery, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to court records.
District Attorney Ashley Wright filed paperwork on Oct. 1 outlining her intent to seek the death penalty.
Robinson, who was captured in Florida, was extradited back to Columbia County on Sept. 26. He fled there after the shooting.
Columbia County deputies said the Davittes were at the church around 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 14 to turn on the sprinkler system. Robinson is accused of attacking Jennifer Davitte in an attempt to steal the couple's car. When William Davitte heard his wife screaming and came back to the car, Robinson shot him, deputies said.
Robinson is being held at the Columbia County Detention Center.
