Augusta Tech Police Academy cadet injured when gun accidentally discharges

BLYTHE, GA (WFXG) - An Augusta Tech Police Academy cadet was accidentally shot in the leg during a training exercise Thursday night at the Richmond County Sheriff's Office Training Center.

Billy Pendell, 44, accidentally discharged his firearm around 9 p.m. at the training center, which is located at 1098 Greenland Road in Blythe, according to the sheriff's office.

Pendell suffered a minor gunshot wound to his right leg, according to the sheriff's office. He was taken to Georgia Regents Medical Center for treatment of his non-life-threatening injury.

The cadets were conducting a "night fire familiarization" exercise when the gun discharged.

The Richmond County Sheriffs Office Internal Affairs Division, in conjunction with Augusta Tech Police Academy personnel, are investigating this incident.

The police academy will continue training as normal with additional support from the Richmond County Sheriff's Office as needed.
