AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

Women can schedule a mammogram at the Georgia Regents Breast Health Center any Saturday in October.

The center is normally open only Monday through Friday, but is offering patients the chance to schedule the exam on Saturdays in October in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The mammograms are offered between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. and can be scheduled by calling 706-721-XRAY (9729).

The Breast Health Center is an American College of Radiology Breast Imaging Center of Excellence and the only center in the area using 3D mammography, also known as tomosynthesis, which has been shown to improve cancer detection and reduce false-positive results.

The Center, which performs more than 5,000 mammograms each year, was recognized by Health Imaging magazine in 2013 with a Patient-centric Imaging Award.

Breast cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death among women, exceeded only by lung cancer. Statistics show that one in eight women will develop breast cancer sometime in her lifetime. If detected early, the five-year survival rate is 97 percent. The American Cancer Society recommends an annual mammogram paired with a clinical breast exam for women 40 and older.

The Breast Health Center is located on the first floor of the Georgia Regents Medical Center at 1120 15th St. For more information, visit www.grhealth.org/breasthealth or call 706-721-9729.
