BATH, SC (WFXG) -

A 68-year-old man is charged with third-degree arson after a suspicious fire occurred at his own house earlier in September.

Sampie Alvin Noakes Sr. was arrested Tuesday and booked at the Aiken County Detention Center, according to the Aiken County Sheriff's Office.

Noakes' house, located at 19 Wall St., caught on fire on Sept. 2, and firefighters extinguished it, according to an incident report.

On Sept. 9, the Midland Valley Fire Department returned after reports that the fire reignited. The fire department requested that investigators respond because the fire was suspicious.

A witness told investigators that Noakes had approached him several days earlier and said that he "had intentional motives to burn the house down," according to the report.

The State Law Enforcement Division and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives assisted in the investigation.
