Richmond Co. deputies still looking for man who ran after traffic stop

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

Richmond County deputies are still looking for a man who ran away from them during a traffic stop on Sept. 26, placing area schools on lockdown.

Shane Champagne, 45, is wanted on an outstanding warrant for a probation violation pertaining to an aggravated assault and a state court bench warrant, according to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office. He will also face other charges once he's arrested.

Champagne fled on foot after deputies pulled him over just before 10 a.m. on Sept. 26 at Tobacco Road and Windsor Spring Road for a seatbelt violation, Sgt. Monica Belser said. He was driving a red pickup truck.

Deputies found two firearms inside the truck, Sgt. Monica Belser said.

Windsor Spring Elementary and Meadowbrook Elementary schools were on lockdown for the majority of the school day as deputies searched the area for Champagne.

"We locked down the schools as a safety issue, just to make sure he didn't get in the schools," said Lt. Allan Rollins with the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.
