AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

Two people are behind bars after a meth lab bust Thursday afternoon near a Richmond County school.

Charles Lee Pennington Jr., 39, and Jay Harland Briele, 45, were arrested after deputies found an active meth lab at 2415 Willis Foreman Road near Willis Foreman Elementary School, according to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.

"We knew something was going on over there, we hoped they would just bust them soon," said Shaylynn Overstreet, a neighbor.

Richmond County investigators rendered the scene safe and secured the site. They also found several inactive meth labs dumped at the same site within feet from the rear of the elementary school.

Pennington and Briele are each charged with manufacturing methamphetamine, trafficking methamphetamine and manufacturing meth within 1,000 fee of a school.

"I honestly hope it will learn them something, and maybe they'll stay in there for a few years, more than a few years, they need it!" said Overstreet.

Richmond County Code Enforcement condemned the location.

The Richmond County Board of Education was notified of the situation.
