GROVETOWN, GA (WFXG) - There's something big coming to the Augusta area.
As we get ready to say goodbye to a hot summer, let's just say it's good timing to announce a new water park. Lights of the South owner Benjamin Bell unveiled this new project.
Scuttles Island is coming right here to the CSRA.
Stretching across 50 acres of land right off of Interstate 20 and Louisville Road, the water park will be an addition to Lights of the South.
"Ten years ago when we opened Lights of South, I actually had this in the back of my mind. It's just hard to raise 20 million dollars," Bell said.
"A project like this doesn't happen overnight," said Columbia County Commission Chairman Ron Cross. "They've been working a little while on it, but I'm sure there's a lot of details that need to be done and see where the finances are really coming from."
The water park is expected to bring a lot of revenue to the Columbia County area.
Within hours of the announcement, it already has folks excited.
"We're very excited," said Becky Croft. "I think it's something we need here in the Grovetown area, because when the school is out during the summer time, there's not really a lot of places for the children to go and enjoy themselves and have fun. So this will kind of like be a little vacation for them."
The water park will have about 20 water slides, a dual wave pool, an organically designed lazy river, a massive children's interactive play area and four restaurants.
Scuttles Island's cool features already have some fans.
"I hope it happens, but I know that these things are not easy to do," Cross said.
Scuttles Island is expected to open by Memorial Day 2015.
