Augusta Canal preps for busy fall season

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - One of Augusta's most historic attractions is getting ready for one of the busiest times of the year.

Behind the door to the Augusta Canal Discovery Center at Enterprise Mill is an exciting world of history.

"I just hope everybody realizes what a wonderful treasure we have here in the Augusta Canal and everyone takes time to come out here and enjoy it," said Rebecca Rogers, marketing and public affairs director for the Augusta Canal.

The canal is one of many great features Augusta has to offer.

"Augusta Canal is known as a national heritage area because it's the only industrial power canal that's still in use from the time it was built in 1845 to today," Rogers said.

Many consider the Augusta Canal a must-see attraction at an affordable price.

"Basic tour price is $12.50 for an adult tour. That's for our one-hour tour that leaves several times a day. We offer $2 discounts for seniors and active duty military and also students."

The Augusta Canal is now preparing for one their busiest seasons: fall.

"Our tourist season really kicks into high gear because we offer the music cruises every Friday night," Rogers said.

Fall leaves create a beautiful scenery.

"The weather turns gorgeous, the water is beautiful, the trees are changing colors," she said. "It's just a great time to just be out just enjoying the Canal and enjoy the trails."

The Canal Discovery Center is open between 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and boat tours are available at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday and at 3 p.m. Sunday.
