Pittman withdraws from consideration for Augusta commissioner seat

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - Sonny Pittman has officially withdrawn his name from consideration to take over the District 7 seat on Augusta Commission.

The seat was vacated by Donnie Smith who resigned following an investigation by the Georgia State Patrol.

Augusta commissioners are expected to vote soon to nominate an interim appointment for the seat.

Augusta Commissioners,

Please accept this letter as my notice of withdrawal from consideration to serve as the Interim Augusta Commissioner for District 7.

I had hoped you would employ a more professional approach to this important appointment selection and believe you have done the so-called "candidates" a great disservice – as well as the good citizens of west Augusta a public disservice – by turning your selection process into nothing more than a very public political horse trading side show.

As I stated to you earlier, I was asked by someone if I would like to serve as the Interim Commissioner for District 7 and responded, "Yes, but I do not intend to run for the post in the March Special Election."I never dreamed that you would turn this process into what it has become. I also stated my firm belief that you and the citizens of District 7 would be better served if you chose an individual who does not intend to be a candidate in March and, therefore, could devote his or her undivided attention to the business of the city and help resolve some of the critical decisions you currently face.

Best wishes,
