Mother arrested after children found walking alone on street

LINCOLN COUNTY, GA (WFXG) -

A mother is behind bars after her three children were found walking down a road alone early Saturday morning.

The Richmond County Sheriff's Office said they received a call around 7:55 a.m. Saturday after Charles Corley and his brother, Tony, saw three kids walking down Old McDuffie Rd.

The Corley brothers were on their way to Virginia Saturday morning when they saw the children who are 6, 5, and 1, walking down Old McDuffie Road.

"We stopped and we got out and got the baby to the side of the road and was talking to the kids and they were looking for their mother, wondering if we'd seen their mother," said Charles.

The Corleys waited for the Richmond County Sheriff's Office to arrive, and deputies talked with the children to try to figure out where their home was. After finding out some information, deputies took the children home. Once deputies arrived at the house, they said they found poor living conditions in the home, including no electricity.

The mother, Vanessa Brunson, 25, later arrived at the house and was arrested and charged with the deprivation of a minor(s).

Charles' brother Jerry said he heard about the incident this morning after a quick phone call, and was completely shocked.

"Makes cold chills go up and down your back. I'd just like to know where they came from, how far had they gotten and how they got to this point," Jerry said.

Charles and  his brother Tony say the important part of the whole incident is that the children are safe, and both agree, this was all part of some greater plan.

"Just knowing that they are safe now, to me, that's the best thing that I could ever do for anybody, my brother and I both. I think probably, everything the way it worked out, was meant to be, because the traffic was down, because it was so early in the morning. And us going that way, we don't normally go that way. For us to go that way I think it was meant to be," said Charles.

The Department of Children and Family Services was notified and said the children were turned over to their aunt.

This is an ongoing investigation and we will be sure to update you with any new information as we receive it.
