AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - An Augusta mother was arrested Wednesday after her 5-year-old son was found locked out of their apartment for two hours.
Jamila Desrai Maston, 26, is charged with child deprivation, according to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.
An employee of an apartment complex on Sapelo Circle told deputies that she saw Jamila Maston's son, Jayvion Maston, get off the school bus around 4:15 p.m. and head toward his apartment, according to an incident report.
A short time later, the employee was riding around the complex when she saw Jayvion standing outside his apartment, according to the report. He told her that his mother was not home, he didn't know where she was or when she would be back.
The apartment complex employee said Jayvion was holding two business cards for case managers with the Department of Family and Children Services that he found in the door, according to the report. She took Jayvion back to the office and tried to call his mother four times but didn't get a response.
She then called the number on one of the business cards. The case managers arrived between 5 and 5:30 p.m. They too tried to contact Maston with no success, according to the report. It was 6:30 when she came back.
Maston told deputies she went to pay bills and get a pizza, according to the report. She did not make arrangements for someone to watch Jayvion.
The officer saw scars on Jayvion's back that he said he got when his mother "whopped him" with a belt, according to the report. The social workers said they had open cases and would investigate the injuries.
Maston was arrested and is being held at the Richmond County jail.
