Ashburn is ready for 'The Wall'

ASHBURN, GA (WALB) -  The city of Ashburn is just a few days away from hosting the Vietnam traveling memorial wall.

Several veterans came out to pay their respects while setting up the grounds. Preparations for the Vietnam traveling memorial wall are almost complete. The stop in Ashburn is personal for some Vietnam veterans who came out to help.

"I served two tours there and overall 25 years in the army," said Michael Geoghagan.

Michael Geoghagan and several other vets set up 37 crosses of local troops who died in combat in Vietnam. Across the front are the names of the men from the six counties that border Turner County: Tift, Crisp, Wilcox, Ben Hill, Worth, Irwin. Geoghagan says getting involved in the process has brought back lots of memories.

"Turner County has five and I knew every one of them. I knew some from Tift County. You can't get away from it and anyone in the surrounding counties won't be able to get away from it," said Geoghagan.

With a few more things to finish, the crosses made visitors traveling through town stop and admire the sight.

"We saw the Vietnam traveling memorial wall, and my father was a Vietnam veteran. He passed two years ago so we thought we stopped and pay our respects," said Kendal Chambers.

The Orlando resident says it's a good feeling to see this south Georgia town come together to honor their past heroes.

"It touches your heart. It makes those tears want to come up because All gave some, but some gave all," said Chambers.

Along with the Vietnam traveling wall, a display of those who died in the Iraq war will also be on display.

The traveling wall will arrive Wednesday afternoon. The opening ceremony for the Vietnam Traveling Wall is Friday at 10 a.m. next door to Carroll's Sausage in Ashburn.
