JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

After three hours of hard work, crews have contained a woods fire near the Mulga community on Thursday night.

Officials said that at last check, 20 acres had burned. Officials said it appears the fire started by someone burning materials outdoors.

The fire came very close to several homes and a church in the Mulga Camp subdivision.

"It's scary. We could have been dead or could possibly lose our home," resident Melanie Ziegler said.

The fire burned so close to the Ziegler home that she and her family had to leave to get to safety.

"I work nights so I was getting ready to go to bed. The cat came to the door, my mother let him out and she saw the smoke. Then my daughter walked to the door and said, 'It's coming up the driveway," Ziegler said.

She and other neighbors watched as dark smoke filled their neighborhood as fire crews from four departments worked to fight the flames.

"With the wind conditions, dry conditions, drought conditions, it just progressed faster than what we could keep up with," Minor Heights Fire District Chief Joe McGough said.

McGough said initially eight different structures were in danger including Peace Baptist Church.

"The forestry commission got in here really quick with us and cut the fire break," he said.

Much of the land is still smoldering Thursday evening.

"Right now, we're hitting hotspots. Gonna be on fire watch through the night," McGough said.
