FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) -

People across Columbus came out to celebrate the 94th anniversary of women's suffrage.

The luncheon on Fort Benning hosted by deputy city manager Lisa Goodwin focused on equality. Women's Equality Day was first celebrated in 1971.

Goodwin spoke with us after the luncheon on the importance this has on the younger generation.

"We have empowered women and we have women that step up to the plate and have done a number of things for the benefit of this nation," Goodwin said. "And then of course not only that but for the communities so I think it's wonderful and I think it's awesome for our young ladies to be able to see women of empowerment."

The luncheon also honored our women in uniform and the people who support them.
