Engineers test SLS model at Marshall Space Flight Center

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Engineers and scientists now have a better idea on how loud lift off of the Space Launch System will be, after the test launch of a scale model of the SLS at Marshall Space Flight Center on Thursday.

The model hosts more than 200 sensors, which take data representative of the predicted SLS acoustic environments.

The data collected from the tests will be used to help direct and verify the design of the rocket's sound suppression system.

"The tests help us to investigate and help predict, as the vehicle lifts off from the pad, how loud it would be and how much we need to reduce the sound," said acoustics engineer Jeremy Kenny.

When completed, the full scale SLS will be capable of taking a crew and cargo on deep space missions, including to an asteroid and eventually Mars.
